We talk to new recruit Martin Watt, head of btl new lending at The Mortgage Lender, about public speaking, the famous chef, comedian and pop star he’d like to invite round for dinner and how a hidden talent resulted in a hat-trick of success…
Who’s the person that’s had the greatest influence on your career, and why?
My Dad. His persona, pragmatism, use of emotional intelligence and breadth of view are personality traits and skills that I endeavour to utilise every day.
Biggest industry opportunity?
There is a huge opportunity to cater for customers who have different lifestyles with innovative products and flexible risk assessment criteria.
Best thing about working in mortgages?
Helping customers achieve their dreams from purchase of their first home to capital raising, move to a bigger home and support during life events.
Which five famous people (dead or alive) would you invite over for dinner?
Jamie Oliver, Rihanna, Kevin Bridges, Henrik Larsson, Jock Stein.
If you won £10 million tomorrow, what would you do with it?
Buy property abroad and enjoy quality time with friends and family in sunny climates.
What’s your hidden talent?
I am a bowler and have won my club championship 3 times.
Save or splash the cash?
Save. Many years of working in Risk roles highlighted the importance of money management and shaped my approach to saving.
Half full or half empty?
Always full. I explore solutions as opposed to dwelling on issues. Someone smiling makes others feel good and using positive language is far more impactful.
A talker or a listener?
I enjoy public speaking. I fully appreciate the importance of listening to understand and showing an interest in others by maintaining the focus on them.
There’s plenty more where that came from. These ones are on us.
